GENERAL RENTAL QUESTIONS

How does renting a costume work?

Renting is easy! We've created a handy guide for how things work at Archive that you can read on our How to Rent page or by clicking here

Can I just come down to try costumes on?

For our walk-in rentals, absolutely! You can call ahead and we can have a costume or two ready for you, or just come down between 10 AM and 5 PM Monday - Saturday to try things on. If you are renting a costume for a school play or theatrical production, however, the rental would be considered a production rental and an appointment is required. If you're not sure whether you need an appointment or not, just call and ask!

What are your prices?

Our prices vary depending on what you would like to rent! Some costumes are rented as an entire character, whereas we can also rent out individual pieces to add to a costume you already have. We know each situation is unique, so each price is unique. As a general ballpark, our costumes range from $5 - $65 per night, with accessories and additional nights adding to that price. A 50% discount is available for consecutive day rentals.

A fee of 20% of the total rental price will be assessed for cleaning and maintenance of all items. A $125 refundable security deposit is also required for each walk-in costume piece rental. A $50 refundable deposit is required for accessory rentals up to $25.

Why is there a security deposit required for a costume rental?

Think of it like renting a hotel room. When you book your stay, they will usually authorize your card for a deposit on your room in case there are any damages caused during your stay, and it drops after your stay. Doing this helps you treat your room extra nice, and also helps the hotel in the event of damages that need repaired. We require deposits on costumes for the same reason.

Deposits must be left in the form of a check, or as verification on a debit card. Cash deposits are prohibited. You can place a deposit up to two months before the day of your event to secure your costume rental. October rental deposits may be placed the first working day of September.

When can I pick up my costume?

It depends on the date listed on your paperwork! You can come in and rent same-day or put down a deposit for a future rental date. Regardless of the date of your rental, our pick up times are between 4 PM and 6 PM Monday - Saturday.

How long can I rent the costume?

We rent per evening for our costumes, and our pick up times are 4 PM - 6 PM Monday - Saturday. You may rent for as many evenings as you will need the costume(s). A 50% discount is available for consecutive day rentals.

What kinds of costumes do you rent?

All kinds! We have accurate historical costumes and period pieces, movie and film characters, adult and kid costumes, and more! We can pull together pieces for all sorts of characters as well. If you have something in mind, give us a call!

Can I rent accessories from you?

We do have some jewelry, canes, gloves, hats, and other accessories available for rent either with your costume or on their own. The best way to find out what we have is to give us a call or come on down!

Do you rent out shapewear or undergarments?

We do not. Any shapewear or undergarments we have are strictly for our in-house productions.

Can you tailor a costume to fit me?

We don't tailor our costumes to fit each rental that comes in. Archive Costumes is full of high quality pieces that are tailored to fit a specific actor or role, but we usually have a few variatons of different types of period pieces or pieces similar to a specific costume. We're sure we'll be able to find something that works for you without alterations, or be able to point you in the right direction if for some reason we can't.

I want to rent a costume for Halloween. How does that work?

Halloween is our busiest rental time, because Halloween is the best! We start taking deposits and reservations for October the first working week of September. If you have your heart set on a specific character or costume for the 31st or any other date in October, we encourage you to come try it on and put down a deposit as soon as possible - every year, costumes are snatched up at the beginning of the season so don't delay!

If you don't have something specific in mind, you can also come down and try a few things on. The closer to Halloween it gets, the busier we are, so try to plan ahead and remember: we take our last fitting at 5 PM Monday - Saturday!

I want to rent a Santa costume for a Christmas party. How does that work?

Santa is a popular character, and while you can rent a Santa year-round, during the holiday season we begin taking Santa rentals on November 1. We encourage you to have your Santa come try things on and put down a deposit as soon as possible - the 25th of December comes up fast!

If you don't have a specific Santa in mind, you can come down and try on a few variations of the jolly old soul. The closer to Christmas it gets, the busier we are, so try to plan ahead and remember: we take our last fitting at 5 PM Monday - Saturday!

I don’t see what I’m looking for on the website, but I want to be _______ character.
Do you have anything like that?

We might! We have so many different period and production pieces that chances are, we can turn you into the character you're thinking of - whether it's a popular film or literary character, historical figure, or a concept you've thought of yourself! The best way for this to happen is for you to come down between 10 AM and 5 PM Monday - Saturday and try a few things on.

I’m in high school and I want to rent one of your costumes for Homecoming/Prom etc.
How does that work?

Exciting! We do require our renters to be at least 18 years old, but for those younger all you'll need to do is bring in a parent or guardian to fill out the paperwork.

Do I need to wash the costume before I bring it back?

Nope! We'll take care of it for you. A fee of 20% of the total rental price will be assessed for cleaning and maintenance of all items. Items laundered or cleaned in any way without prior management approval may be subject to distress or replacement fees.

Do you sell costumes?

We don't sell our costumes! We do occasionally launch yard sale events throughout the year where we clean our stock room and make room for new costumes, and these events are open to the public! We post all the details on our Facebook page and blog when these sales happen, so be sure to follow along there!

Do you buy costumes?

We do not purchase costumes from the public, but we do accept donations. If you would like to make a donation, please call us to make sure we can accept it and we will set up a time where you can bring it down. We do not offer any compensation or special accommodations to those who choose to donate their items to Archive, but we sincerely appreciate them and thank you for helping us make our costume department the best in the state.

Do you offer any discounts?

We do not offer any ongoing discounts, but we may have offers included in coupon mailers, programs of current HCTO productions, or on our Facebook page that you can take advantage of while available.

PRODUCTION RENTAL QUESTIONS

How do production rentals work?

All production rentals begin with an appointment and must be scheduled. You can learn more about our production rental policies by visiting our Policies page or by clicking here.

Why do I need to make an appointment for a production rental?

Making an appointment allows us to give your production the care and attention it needs. Our production services include pulling all items from stock and personal consultation with Archive management, and an appointment gives us time to have both of these services ready for you.

How far in advance do you need to know about my production to pull my costumes?

We can accept production rental requests up two weeks prior to your event. If you have less than two weeks until your production, give us call to see if we can make something work for you.

What do you charge for production rentals?

Production rental fees are calculated in the following manner:

     1st week
          Full rental list price

     Additional weeks
50% of full rental list price for rentals outside of Utah
25% of full rental list price for Utah rentals

A 25% non-refundable design fee is required before any production rental may be taken for approval. The design fee will be applied to the final rental cost. In the event of a production cancellation, the 25% design fee will be considered the cancellation fee. In addition, a refundable damage and loss deposit is required before any production rental may be taken for approval. This deposit is $125 or 20% of the entire rental cost, whichever is higher. Additional shipping and handling charges will be applied as needed. Production rental rates are only available to the production costumer.

How long can we keep the costumes?

Each production rental is unique to the production itself and fees are assessed as such. Schedule an appointment with one of our Archive staff to discuss length of rental.

Can we make repairs or alterations to the costumes?

Any alteration made to a costume piece is expected to be removed before its return. If repair is needed for a costume piece it is expected that measures be taken to ensure the piece incurs no further damage. With this in mind we do ask that care be taken when repairing an article of clothing.

For example:

  • Please use matching thread when repairing seams
  • DO NOT use pins to alter or repair a piece, it only worsens the tear
  • NEVER use tape on the garments

Repair kits will be sent with production rentals if available and only upon request. Repair kits can have additional textile pieces for mending as well as buttons, trims, and closures. If there is any question in regards to a repair, please contact an Archive representative for further instruction before the repair is made.

Strict adherance to cleaning and maintenance instruction is mandatory. Replacement or distress fees will be assessed for any costume piece that has been damaged due to repairs, alterations, or cleaning prodcedures. It is highly recommended that dress shields be used in garments.

I don’t live in your state. Can I still rent from you?

Absolutely! Just send us an email or give us a call to get things started.

I don’t see what I’m looking for on the website, but we are doing _______ show. Do you have costumes for that?

We might! We have so many different period and production pieces that chances are, we can create something that fits your needs! The best way for this to happen is for you to send us an email with the details of your production and needs and we can go from there.

Do you offer any discounts for production rentals?

We do not offer any ongoing discounts, but we may have offers included in coupon mailers, programs of current HCTO productions, or on our Facebook page that you can take advantage of while available.
